I met your mom in 1964-65 at UCLA in Hershey
Hall (an all girls dormitory). I came from Taiwan to pursuit
my Ph.D. in Biology. Your mom was an undergraduate student
in business. I was a shy Chinese girl from the old country
struggling to learn English and adapt to the American way
of life.
Your Mom was a friendly and curious American
born Chinese girl, eager to learn more about her roots and
to reach out to her "Chinese sister". She has all
the good qualities of an American - free spirited, energetic
and outgoing. She also inherited the Chinese virtues of generosity,
thriftiness, industriousness, strong family values and high
respect for intellect. She always had strong self-esteem as
a Chinese American. She was a very brave and strong young
woman, always proud of her heritage and not afraid to be different.
As I looking back to the 60s, it was not easy to stand tall
as a Chinese American in almost all white girls dormitory.
Anna always included me in the feasts in Chinatown when your
grandparents came to visit. She also shared the Chinese goodies
and vegetables your grandparents brought her. At that young
age, she was mature enough to care for others and share the
warmth of her parents' love. She was so generous in her heart
and in her deeds.
When she met Jim, your father, she could
hardly wait to introduce him to us (my husband and me). Your
father has a similar background to ours; he came from Taiwan
to get his Ph.D. in the U.S. We clicked immediately. Sometimes
we just started to speak in Chinese, forgetting that Anna
did not understand. She protested but never got angry with
us.
